Spheres, those universal and ubiquitous shapes, figure often in Ulrich Pakker designs. Spheroid - Space Within explores what is the nucleus of a sphere. The negative space within a sphere answers this question. Or not. By carving out interior space, Ulrich realizes an indeterminate center around which flow geometric, physical and rhythmic forces. Creating a protected space within the massive curved metal layers emphasizes fragility, like a hand cradling a soap bubble. In some iterations, its planet-like tilt adds to the delicate balance. In the newest incarnation, the center spindle sets the piece gently spinning in space.
